It is standardly assumed that there are three — and only three — ways to solve problem of temporary intrinsics: (a) embrace presentism, (b) relativize property possession to times, or (c) accept the doctrine of temporal parts. The first two solutions are favoured by endurantists, whereas the third is the perdurantist solution of choice. In this paper, I argue that there is a further type of solution available to endurantists, one that not only avoids the usual costs, but is structurally (...) identical to the temporal-parts solution preferred by perdurantists. In addition to providing a general characterization of this new type of solution, I discuss certain of its anticipations in the literature on bundle theory, as well as provide a detailed development of it in terms of my own preferred metaphysics of ordinary objects — namely, a distinctive form of substratum theory tracing to Aristotle. If the density matrix is treated as an objective description of individual systems, it may become possible to attribute the same objective significance to statistical mechanical properties, such as entropy or temperature, as to properties such as mass or energy. It is shown that the de Broglie--Bohm interpretation of quantum theory can be consistently applied to density matrices as a description of individual systems. The resultant trajectories are examined for the case of the delayed choice interferometer, for which Bell [Int. (...) J. Quantum chem. 155--159, (1980)] appears to suggest that such an interpretation is not possible. Bell’s argument is shown to be based upon a different understanding of the density matrix to that proposed here. (shrink)

IntroductionBisphenol A is highly debated and studied in relation to a variety of health outcomes. This large variation in the literature makes BPA a topic that is prone to selective use of literature, in order to underpin one’s own findings and opinion. Over time, selective use of literature, by means of citations, can lead to a skewed knowledge development and a biased scientific consensus. In this study, we assess which factors drive citation and whether this results in the overrepresentation of (...) harmful health effects of BPA.MethodsA citation network analysis was performed to test various determinants of citation. A systematic search identified all relevant publications on the human health effect of BPA. Data were extracted on potential determinants of selective citation, such as study outcome, study design, sample size, journal impact factor, authority of the author, self-citation, and funding source. We applied random effect logistic regression to assess whether these determinants influence the likelihood of citation.ResultsOne hundred sixty-nine publications on BPA were identified, with 12,432 potential citation pathways of which 808 citations occurred. The network consisted of 63 cross-sectional studies, 34 cohort studies, 29 case-control studies, 35 narrative reviews, and 8 systematic reviews. Positive studies have a 1.5 times greater chance of being cited compared to negative studies. Additionally, the authority of the author and self-citation are consistently found to be positively associated with the likelihood of being cited. Overall, the network seems to be highly influenced by two highly cited publications, whereas 60 out of 169 publications received no citations.ConclusionIn the literature on BPA, citation is mostly driven by positive study outcome and author-related factors, such as high authority within the network. Interpreting the impact of these factors and the big influence of a few highly cited publications, it can be questioned to which extent the knowledge development in human literature on BPA is actually evidence-based. Dynamical collapse models embody the idea of a physical collapse of the wave function in a mathematically well-defined way. They involve modifications to the standard rules of quantum theory in order to describe collapse as a physical process. This appears to introduce a time reversal asymmetry into the dynamics since the state at any given time depends on collapses in the past but not in the future. Here we challenge this conclusion by demonstrating that, subject to specified model constraints, collapse (...) models can be given a structurally time symmetric formulation in which the collapse events are the primitive objects of the theory. Three different examples of time asymmetries associated with collapse models are then examined and in each case it is shown that the same dynamical rule determining the collapse events works in both the forward and backward in time directions. Any physically observed time asymmetries that arise in such models are due to the asymmetric imposition of initial or final time boundary conditions, rather than from an inherent asymmetry in the dynamical law. This is the standard explanation of time asymmetric behaviour resulting from time symmetric laws. (shrink)

Warning research participants and patients about potential risks associated with participation/treatment is a fundamental part of consent. However, such risk warnings might cause negative expectations and subsequent nocebo effects (i.e., negative expectations cause negative outcomes) in participants. Because no existing review documents how past research has quantitatively examined nocebo effects – and negative expectations – arising from consent risk warnings, we conducted a pre-registered scoping review (N = 9). We identified several methodological issues across these studies, which in addition to (...) mixed findings, limit conclusions about whether risk warnings cause nocebo effects. (shrink)

According to Quine the inscrutability of reference leads to ontological relativity, or, as Donald Davidson calls it, relativity of reference. Davidson accepts both inscrutability and the indeterminacy of translation which it grounds, but rejects any explicit relativity of reference or ontology. The reasons behind this rejection are set out and explained. Explicit relativization is shown to be at odds with indeterminacy. Some notion of the relativity of reference (or, more generally, interpretation) is nevertheless shown to be both possible and necessary. (...) It is, however, a relativity which is compatible with commensurability — the idea of absolute incommeasurability is ruled out along with the realist ideal of universal commensuration — as well as with indeterminacy. The indeterminacy thesis itself undergoes some slight elaboration, particularly in respect of the notion of empirical equivalence. In general the resulting account is one which retains both the absolute character of truth and some sense of the relativity of ontology against the background of Davidsonian holism. (shrink)

Citing of previous publications is an important factor in knowledge development. Because of the great amount of publications available, only a selection of studies gets cited, for varying reasons. If the selection of citations is associated with study outcome this is called citation bias. We will study determinants of citation in a broader sense, including e.g. study design, journal impact factor or the funding source of the publication. As a case study we assess which factors drive citation in the human (...) literature on phthalates, specifically the metabolite mono phthalate. A systematic literature search identified all relevant publications on human health effect of MEHP. Data on potential determinants of citation were extracted in duplo. Specialized software was used to create a citation network, including all potential citation pathways. Random effect logistic regression was used to assess whether these determinants influence the likelihood of citation. 112 Publications on MEHP were identified, with 5684 potential citation pathways of which 551 were actual citations. Reporting of a harmful point estimate, journal impact factor, authority of the author, a male corresponding author, research performed in North America and self-citation were positively associated with the likelihood of being cited. In the literature on MEHP, citation is mostly driven by a number of factors that are not related to study outcome. Although the identified determinants do not necessarily give strong indications of bias, it shows selective use of published literature for a variety of reasons. (shrink)

Fried provides a conventional exposition of deontological ethics. The accentuated polemical tone directed against consequentialism fills the reader with expectations of imminently coming upon a novel line of argumentation advancing the cause of deontology—but he is only to be disappointed.

The opening chapter of this work is a comprehensive “Historical Overview of the Hereditary Puzzle.” Goldie Morgentaler's analysis of theories of heredity before Mendel will interest students of biological science. She admits that “resurrecting such theories without contamination from subsequent knowledge often requires an imaginative leap.” Very true. There have been such profound advances in the science of genetics since that time, with the avalanche of discoveries during the past half century, that much of the previous thought now falls in (...) the realm of philosophical fantasy.These early concepts were those to which Charles Dickens was exposed for most of his life. His literary reaction to them is exhaustively analyzed in the subsequent two parts of the book. The first of these is entitled “Heredity and the Individual,” and the second is “The Public Face of Heredity.” The latter includes interesting discussion of class and race, with analyses of the last three novels. These indicate that Dickens's views on heredity changed during his later life, perhaps influenced by Darwin, whose work he had read … and vice versa.The author is to be admired for her detailed knowledge of Dickens's works and his characters. For a reviewer who has been steeped in evidence‐based medicine and science for most of his career, it seems that much of the speculation regarding heredity in the nineteenth century is tenuous and far‐fetched. While Dickens engaged the topic of heredity many times, he appears to have followed the general trend of that era by showing little consistency in his views. This is not surprising in light of the paucity of scientific evidence at that time.While the title implies a study of Dickens and heredity, the substance covers a much wider field, with ventures into ethics, morality, religion, psychology, philosophy, sociology, and more. The appended notes tell of assiduous research and concentration. To the pragmatic reader it sometimes appears that Morgentaler makes observations and draws conclusions that are more profound than Dickens himself might have achieved, or admitted. This is, of course, a common diversion in revisionist studies of well‐known authors and other celebrities.It is inevitable that the perennial question of the relative strength of nature and nurture must have prominence in this study. In his earlier novels Dickens implied support for the notion that goodness and virtue were heritable traits allied to beauty and good physical appearance. Morgentaler returns repeatedly to this question in many aspects. In her final chapter she points out that Dickens's views changed, paradoxically, after The Origin of Species was published, toward the end of his life. He then gave less weight to the influence of heredity. She has, perhaps, missed an opportunity of recording that Dickens noticed hereditary factors in alcoholism and longevity. In the case of Jenny Wren's family, Mr. Cleaver was “like his own father, a weak wretched trembling creature, falling to pieces, never sober” . The Wardle family in Pickwick Papers showed familial longevity in that “only one member hasn't lived to eighty‐five, and he was beheaded by one of the Henrys.”The relationship of some of the discussion to heredity is profound, often remote, even cryptic. To those who are hybrids of a scientific historian and an obsessive Dickens aficionado, this work will be absorbing. Unfortunately for the author and the publisher, such hybrids are probably rare—but I hope not extinct. To the pure scientist this work might be an uphill exercise. What are physical quantities, and in particular, what makes them quantitative?
